Portrait workshop at Nelson Ghost Town

Was able to catch a portrait workshop in Las Vegas taught by Scott Robert Lim. After we had all gather and signed in we were driven to the Nelson Ghost Town which is south east of the Strip. Its a pretty cool place to do a shoot, with lots of props and different backgrounds to use. When we got there Scott did a lecture on how we can improve our portraits and then we moved to doing live demos. The models were scattered throughout the area and we roamed freely. Scott would do live demos as well. I like how Scott explained things in very simple terms that even this guy was able to grasp some of the ideas. Thanks Scott!

Key take aways
  • See shapes - put your subject insides the shapes and make sure you don't have lines running through the subjects head
  • Nose towards the light source - point the nose to the light source is an easy way to deal with shadows on the face
  • Use darker background to make sure your subject is still lit well when its bright out - one way to help not blow out your shot if the sun is behind your subject is to use a background that is of a similar exposure as the subject. Like don't use the sky at this point.
