My GF2

There has been a growing number of times in my life where lugging around my camera bag with my DSLR and lens have been a bother while at a restaurant, sporting event or concert especially when you're not permitted in taking pictures. I've tried getting smaller bags and pairing down the amount of lens to bring with. There is always the matter of where to put the bag. I guess I'm too clean to leave my bag sitting on the floor of a restaurant.

I really didn't want to buy into two different system but a point and shoot on the side didn't have the features or controls I wanted. I managed to snag the Panasonic GF2 and 14mm F2.5 for a fairly good deal. We will see how slippery this slope will be in the near future.

With the 2x crop the 14mm is effectively a 28mm. A little wider than I would like to have if this is going to be my one lens but the reviews were better between this one and the 17mm F2.8. I have used both but had not used the 17mm long enough, with the little experience I have had I would agree with the reviews.

I love how I'm able to click on the LCD and the camera would focus and take the picture. The size and weight is great for carrying around everywhere. I like how its a metal body and not some piece of plastic. You have as much control over your photography as if you were using a a DSLR and the compactness of a point and shoot. Being about to shoot in raw is a huge plus for me. Having a hotshoe for a flash or my remote trigger is another plus.

My current complaints with the GF2 is its hard to hold when you are trying to use the touch shoot feature, a wrist strap would be better in securing confidence than the neck strap. Either that or I get use to some other way of holding the camera. Since I was envisioning this as my stealthy street photography camera, the shutter sound, which is an actual shutter is something less than desired. The provided manual isn't very helpful in explaining what each of the settings on the menu do, I've had to poke around the internet to find what I wanted to turn on or off.

I have not tried out the video feature yet.

Some more opinions
  • Iso1600 is as far as I would push the sensor, even then some of it is unusable IMO
  • Battery life is pretty good
  • AF is pretty quick in this setup
  • FPS is slow while shooting in raw, it doesn't feel like its at the posted 3.2 fps
